Gravity Paste by Hanz de Fuko

Gravity Paste by Hanz de Fuko

Have you ever used a pomade that tells you when it’s ready to be used? Hanz de Fuko created Gravity Paste which does just that. This product has more of a paste consistency unlike the traditional pomade. A more smooth, paste makes it easier to apply into the hair. But you have to wait until Gravity Paste is ready!! You’ll know by rubbing a small amount between your hands and continuing until you feel it become tacky. They call that “Super Grip” technology. Many find it similar to what a fiber paste does when it’s emulsified in the hands.

You can used Gravity Paste in just about any short hairstyle, regardless of the texture. It can be scrunched into damp or dry hair for texture and high hold. If you’re looking for a smooth style, you can still use Gravity Paste’s high hold to keep your style together without looking stiff. You can even cocktail one of Hanz de Fuko’s other products to achieve more control for your style!

Hair Trends of 2018 Autumn & Winter

Hair Trends of 2018 Autumn & Winter

From the catwalk everything is looking so effortlessly chic!! The hair is a well put together mess. It’s almost as if the models did the hair themselves. Tight ponytails have baby hairs naturally stick out. The curls are more wavy. Bangs don’t have a smooth finish.

image.jpg

In the salon, everything is warm! Megan Decker from Refinery29 says there are 6 color trends to look out for. Rich reds are a must! This isn’t the firetruck red that you’re used to looking at, they’re more of a cinnamon, warm red. Deeper in tone with hints of brown or beige. Dusty blondes are next. Instead of seeing that shiney, bright blonde, you’ll want it to look a little more matte and ashy. Cold brew balayage is third, with hints of lightness in between that rich dark brown base. With the warm colors also comes the warm, golden tones. Add more warmth to complement your natural color, like strawberry blonde for more fun. Fifth, we have the shadow root. This will complement your last summer service with a cooler grow out. And finally, rich brown! Your hair deserves a break from bleach. Going back to your natural color allows your hair to rest without it looking dull.

Using Products 101

Using Products 101

There are many products out there that are pretty self explanatory when it comes to when to use them. The container can say things like heat protectant or texture spray. When you think to use a heat protectant, it’s easy to think that you’d apply it before you put any heat to your hair. Now how about the texture spray? When do we know to apply it; in wet hair or dry hair? Always look to the back for specific directions because every brand has different products and different ways of using them.

Once you’ve figured out when to apply it, how to apply it is important. The amount of product you put in your hair corresponds to the amount of hair you have. So you may want to use more than a few drops if you have a lot of hair versus someone who has less hair. Creams, serums, mouses, gels and pomades should be emulsified well into your hands in order to get the most out of those products. This helps to equally distribute product into your hair. We’ve all had the accident of having way too much product in one spot. Another tip is to avoid using your palms to apply product! Doing this just mushes the product into the first area it touches. Raking your fingers through your hair is the best way to get the products into your hair evenly. Sprays don’t require a lot of work, but they do need distance between the bottle and your hair. This helps to make sure the product isn’t focused at a single area. Don’t be afraid to be a little spazzy when spraying the product all over your hair. Even distribution is key to any hair products you use! And always start with less product because you can always go back and add more.

The barbering industry seemed to have never had a printed publication that barbers felt like truly represented the current movement and culture. In January 2017, BarberEVO set out to lead the way by “connect[ing] brands to barbershop owners and key decision makers throughout the industry” in the UK and Ireland. Their goal is to inspire and bring insight by gathering some of the biggest names and brands in the barbering world and “encapsulating the incredible culture that surrounds barbering” into one magazine.

Thanks to their success in the UK and Ireland, in April 2018, BarberEVO decided to launch it in North America making it the only barbering trade publication on the continent. This year there will be six issues of this magazine released every two months. BarberEVO keep us up to date with current trends as well as staying in-the-know with the newest products and tools.

Why would you want permanent hair color over a demi-permanent color ?

Why would you want permanent hair color over a demi-permanent color ?

As licensed professionals, it is our job to know why you should use one type of hair color over the other. But many times as clients, we think we know the difference and we may think that one type would work better when in reality the other type of hair color is actually what you need. This blog will give you a better understanding of the difference between permanent color and demi-permanent color.

Permanent hair color is exactly what it sounds like. Without getting too science-y, it will permanently alter the color of your hair shaft. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it will not fade because all hair color fades in some way. Permanent hair color is perfect for those with gray hair and those people that are happy with the same hair color. Now if you’re the type of person that is always changing their hair color, demi-permanent color is the best for you. Unfortunately it can fade faster than permanent color because the color molecule does not go all the way inside the hair shaft, just slightly. But the perk is, your hairstylist doesn’t have to worry about your hair being over-processed from months of permanent color if you wanted to change your hair color from time to time.

Don’t be afraid to consult with your hairstylist about what is best for your hair color goal or goals.

Reuzel Extreme Hold Matte Pomade

This past June, Reuzel has come out with, yet again, an awesome pomade!! Extreme Hold Matte Pomade is the new pig in town! This is the strongest hold, matte pomade on their lineup. It’s even water-based so you don’t have to worry about any product buildup. It works well with fine to thick hair for the messy-textured look. Here is a “Scumbassdor Tip” to get the most out of their new pomade.

“The perfect cocktail for maximum hold, apply Extreme Hold Matte Pomade to damp hair at the roots and pull product through the ends of hair once hair is dry. Overall, our strongest combo that provides heavy hold throughout the day.”

How can buying professional products differ from generic, drug store products?

How can buying professional products differ from generic, drug store products?

In our current society, consumers gravitate towards what is cheap and the most easily accessible. When it comes to hairstylists and barbers recommending what is best for their client’s hair, price point is often the determining factor even if it’s sitting in their salon or barbershop. We as barbers and hairstylists are not trying to make a sale, we are truly trying to provide the best for our client’s needs.

As a consumer, think about how much you invest into your hair. Hundreds if not thousands of dollars a year. So why not invest a little more into maintaining your investment? Professional products are priced higher, but with a logical reason. Professional hair care companies invest in what they believe to be the absolute best ingredients and technology on the market to provide the best results. Drugstore brands try to emulate those companies, but at a cheaper price. They know the average consumer wants to spend the least amount possible on hair care. Now think, at a cheaper price, are drugstore brands using the best ingredients and technology on the market? Is the price tag comparable to what you spend on services for your hair? In the end, which hair care brands truly care for your hair?

Blonde Rush Shampoo & Conditioner by Privé

Blonde Rush Shampoo & Conditioner by Privé

There are so many different purple shampoos and conditioners on the market that it can get a bit overwhelming. At All Society, we always try to provide the best service and products for our clients. So when we made the switch to Privé, this shampoo and conditioner just reassured us that this product line truly is one of the best out there.

Purple shampoos and conditioners are made to tone out unwanted colors, specifically yellows and brass for those of you that love to be blonde. Using this regularly in between color appointments helps maintain your blonde goals, but a lot of other purple shampoos can have a harsh reaction to the hair. It’s suggested to use only once a week because it tends to dry out the hair. The awesome thing about Blonde Rush by Privé is that it can be used every wash because it’s packed with natural plant superfuel antioxidants, revitalizing oils, strengthening proteins and their special powerhouse blend. It’s even color safe!! Privé clearly knows what blonde hair needs!

Hair Enhancements

Hair Enhancements

If you are familiar or interested in the barbering industry, I’m sure you’ve heard the word “enhancements”. Enhancements are products consisting of either hair fibers or temporary hair color or both. They offer a more defined and full look for hairlines, designs and beards.

Enhancements are perfect for those that are a looking for more “umph” to complete their haircut or even to help disguise a few flaws. Both the hair color and hair fibers used for enhancements are temporary, lasting only a few washes. A great time to get hair enhancements is for a photoshoot or special event where you want your hair to look at its full potential. If you have a special day planned, don’t be afraid to ask your barber if this is a service they offer!

Claymation by Hanz de Fuko

Claymation by Hanz de Fuko

Claymation is HDF’s number one selling product and it’s clear why! Our barber/hairstylist, Arielle and educator for HDF says Claymation is the big brother of Quicksand (see our previous blog for more details). A small amount of Quicksand is added to this “clay-wax” product which gives it a weightless feel with a touch of grit. In the container it feels and looks like a clay but on the hair it dries like a wax.

Now you make think “clays and waxes are heavy and difficult to apply on the hair”, this is where Claymation proves you wrong. Once you manipulate the product in your hands it becomes more pliable so it will be easy to work onto the hair. The best thing is you don’t need a lot to keep your hairstyle in place and it’s reshapable throughout the day!! You may also find that many waxes leave a coating around the hair that is not easy to wash out. Well, Claymation is completely water soluble!

Apply Claymation into wet hair to achieve a sleek look or apply into dry hair for a smooth, textured finish.

More about Privé

More about Privé

Today at All Society we were able to dive deeper into what Privé is all about. Before our class, we already knew that the products contain clean ingredients and all the products that Privé has available is narrowed down to the essentials. What we learned today has reassured our decision of making the switch to this line.

Each of the products serve their own purpose, but within all of the products, they all have a common denominator. All of the products contain a “powerhouse blend” of natural ingredients that are crafted from two lineups. The first is an “antioxidant line-up to invigorate and protect” the hair by using bamboo, acai, green tea leaf, goji berry, sweet green peas, pomegranate and charcoal. “Antioxidants are nature's shield against free radicals, deterioration and damage”. The second lineup is the “revitalizing line-up for rebuilding and strengthening from the inside out” which utilizes jojoba, baobob, kukui and quinoa. The “powerhouse blend” is so natural you could almost eat it!! We saved the best perk for last, 1% of all sales go to help women in need!! #careforall

Not only will this help us as hairstylists and barbers create the best hair experience for you, but it will be sure to maintain the health and longevity of your hair while you’re at home too!

Karli's Clients

Karli's Clients

Recently, our hairstylist Karli R. posted a few photos of how her clients’ vivid colors have faded out over a 4-8 month period. Her clients have done such a great job at taking care of their hair. Remember our blog on “Maintaining Vivid Colors”? They use our tips to help maintain their hair at home to keep their color as beautiful as they do! Here are those key points again.

  • Wash hair at least once a week (dry shampoo is your best friend)

  • Shampoo/condition with COOL water

  • Use sulfate and paraben free shampoo and conditioner

  • Pigmented shampoo (Viral - check out our previous blog post for more info)

  • Air dry as much as possible

  • Hot tools:

    • Heat protectant

  • Hair treatments: Olaplex #3 or Unite’s 7Seconds Masque

Quicksand by Hanz De Fuko

Quicksand by Hanz De Fuko

Hanz De Fuko has truly outdone themselves with this product. Quicksand is “one part styling wax and one part dry shampoo”. It’s paste like consistency allows for easy application but it’s still able to maintain a high hold.

Quicksand is like sea salt spray in a paste form! When manipulating it in your hands, you will feel a grainy texture which is diatomaceous earth, “a soft granular rock similar to pumice”. The only formula on the market to contain diatomaceous earth! This ingredient helps absorb excess oil in the hair and scalp and gives the hair a fuller feel. It can be used in dry hair and even blow dried into wet hair. Quicksand can be used for women’s hair too! They can apply it at the roots days after not washing their hair to absorb oils or just to add volume before blow drying their hair into style. This product is perfect for textured looks and adding volume into the hair.

How often should women and men get haircuts?

How often should women and men get haircuts?

Every now and again we as hairstylists and barbers get the question, “how often should I come back for a haircut?” The answer to this question can be determined on the hair length. Now let’s break it down in terms of “men” and “women” haircuts.

For feminine hair, the frequency of haircuts is a lot less due to the length of the hairstyle. Typically ladies like to have long hair, therefore they do not need to come is as often to maintain the style. What they do need to come in for is to maintain the health of their hair ends. Hair is more susceptible to damage when using hot tools and wearing the hair up. The way to prevent further breakage is to come in about every 8+ weeks for trims. Now, don’t worry, if you’re getting trims regularly, you do not need to cut 1.5+ inches every time because you are maintaining control of the damaged ends. If you’re cutting your hair once a year or less, it’s absolutely necessary to cut more than 1.5 inches off because you allowed the brittle ends to linger which also causes breakage to grow up the hair.

Masculine hairstyles are worn a lot shorter, so when the hair grows, it’s quite obvious the hairstyle needs to be touched up. For short hair that exposes the hairline, it is highly recommended to come in every 2-4 weeks for a haircut to maintain the hairstyle. Damaged ends are not something to be worried about since short hairstyles don’t necessarily need the assistance of hot tools, with the exception of a blow dryer. When a short haircut is on the long side of short, you can go about 4-6 weeks to maintain the style. For example, those that like long shaggy hair that’s still too short to tie back, can come in less frequently than someone that has a fade.

Now that you’re more aware of what determines how often you should get a haircut, take into consideration of what you can do and use on your hair to prevent breakage and to add protection.

Hair of Fifa World Cup

Hair of Fifa World Cup

Have you been watching the Fifa World Cup this year? If not, I’m sure you’ve heard or seen tweets about the players hair! The World Cup seems to be such a hot topic during its season because it’s a sport played around the entire world. Since there is no headgear worn in the sport, the players’ hair is always something you can’t miss. You see every hair texture that exists so anyone is bound to be inspired by the professional soccer players’ hairstyle -- or not. They use their hair to stand out amongst their teammates and opponents.

Take David Beckham for example, many men bring in a photo of him for hairstyle inspiration. Whether it’s his slicked back undercut or the long and grown out comb-over. This year, Brazil’s team member, Neymar was a HUGE hit on twitter. Fifa fans could not ignore his bleach locks. Looking like someone just dumped spaghetti right on top of his head. “Neymar’s no stranger to an outlandish do. All throughout his career he’s somehow convinced hairdressers to ignore every fiber of their being and use him as a test case for the most experimental styles around.” So do you watch Fifa World Cup for the sport and to support your favorite team? Or do you watch for hair entertainment?

What is Tonic?

What is Tonic?

Typically used on men, tonic has been used for centuries. Similar to an astringent, it takes a liquid form. It’s used to revitalize, refresh and stimulate the face, scalp and hair. Tonic can also add moisture to the hair and scalp and some can even be used for hairstyling.

Reuzel has two tonics that can be used on the hair and scalp. Their blue hair tonic is used to help break down product buildup from using heavy styling products and it’s also suggested to be used after every shampoo to help regulate one’s scalp environment. It can help prevent conditions like dandruff and dry scalp from it’s moisturizing properties. Reuzel’s second tonic is their grooming tonic used for hair styling. It can be applied as a pre-styler for added control and volume. It also works similar to a gel when used in damp hair because after air drying it can hold the style in place, or even as a finisher for added shine to the hair.

Reuzel Blue Pomade

Reuzel Blue Pomade

Blue is one of Reuzel’s most popular pomade. This water-soluble pomade is suitable for any hair texture for a strong hold and high shine. They suggest to start off using the amount of two knuckles distributed from roots to ends for the best control and volume. You can even add more if needed without having to worry about drying or flaking. Some strong hold pomades can be difficult to emulsify but Reuzel added castor oil into their formula for manageability and moisture. Reuzel Blue creates a polished look for any hairstyle.

Voluminous Hair

Voluminous Hair

Asking your hair stylist to cut your hair to add volume is in fact a myth! It’s hypothetically impossible for us to add volume into your hair through a haircut. What we can do is give you the illusion that you have more voluminous hair with a short haircut. Pixies and bobs are the haircuts where we can give your hair “volume” because the shorter your hair is the more structure and shape we can add to your look. Long hair tends to be weighed down and gives an elongated illusion to your facial structure. What hairstylists can do to adjust that issue is remove some of that weight by adding layers, not volume. Volume is added through products like root boosters, volumizing sprays and powders with the addition of styling your hair with a blow dryer and brush or other hot tools. So if your goal is to have beautiful voluminous hair, plan on spending some time styling your hair and your hairstylist will be glad to show you some tips and tricks on how to style big hair!
