It’s one of the hottest trends in women’s hair color today and it’s the #1 color service requested in salons… it’s called Balayage and we LOVE it!
Bawly-what??? We’re so happy you asked! Balayage is a technique for highlighting hair in which the lightener or color is painted on in a such a way as to create a graduated, natural-looking effect. It is a French word that means ‘to sweep or paint’. This technique has been around for decades, but has skyrocketed in popularity over the past few years. Some people might assume that it’s just free-hand highlighting, taking the place of using foil. However, Balayage is a very technical and specialized art form that requires proper training and LOTS of practice to perfect. What you’re getting in the salon with a highly skilled artist is not just highlights… you’re getting a hand-painted work of art tailored specifically for YOU!!!
So, why do we love it so much? Unlike foiling, the hand-painted Balayage technique creates a beautiful, naturally sun-kissed look that is softer with a much less noticeable regrowth. There are no hard lines of demarcation like you would typically see with traditional foiled highlights, which needs to be touched up every 4-6 weeks. In fact, most custom brushed highlights actually look BETTER as it grows out… it just looks like you’ve spent a little more time in the sun! Most Balayage clients will return to the salon for haircuts, conditioning treatments, glossing, etc… but touching up that beautiful masterpiece usually only needs to be done 2-3 times per year.* Lower maintenance?!? Ummmm… yes, please!!!
Yeah, sounds awesome… but how much does it cost? The price of Balayage varies by salons and artists, but an average starting price would be somewhere around $150 and up. The price for your custom color service is determined during the consultation with a colorist. They will quote your cost prior to the service while considering various factors such as: hair length, thickness, desired level of lightening/saturation, etc. You don’t have to be a math genius to figure this one out. You can stick to the usual foils and go into the salon every 4-6 weeks at $80+ a pop, or you can get a seamless, sun-kissed, custom masterpiece that requires minimal maintenance. Hmmmm….
Hair fads come and go… the mullet, big 80’s hair, Spice Girl stripes… they all had their time (and some of us have the embarrassing old photos to laugh at now!) Balayage is not a fad, but rather a trend in forward progression. Remember those horrendous caps salons used for “frosting” the hair? Yeeeahh…. that’s called highlighting blind. Foils were a huge improvement and, yes, there’s still a time and a place for them. But, Balayage has now taken highlighting to the next level… and we L-O-V-E this game changer!
